Pride announces 2006 Program: NOIR

The 2006 Pride of Cincinnati presents “Noir

Film noir was marked by expressionistic lighting, deep-focus camera work, disorienting visual schemes, jarring editing or juxtaposition of elements, skewed camera angles (usually vertical or diagonal rather than horizontal), circling cigarette smoke, existential sensibilities, and unbalanced compositions. Settings were often interiors with low-key lighting, venetian-blinded windows and rooms, and dark, claustrophobic, gloomy appearances. Exteriors were often urban night scenes with deep shadows, wet asphalt, dark alleyways, rain-slicked or mean streets, flashing neon lights, and low key lighting. Story locations were often in murky and dark streets, dimly-lit apartments and hotel rooms of big cities, or abandoned warehouses. [Often-times, war-time scarcities were the reason for the reduced budgets and shadowy, stark sets of B-pictures and film noirs.]

While the 30 talented young men and women of Pride will not be portraying an actual film noir movie, they will be applying the basic principles of this genre to the color guard activity through the staging, choreography, set, and costume design. The soundtrack, The Ebony Concerto by Igor Stravinsky, will establish a key component of the mood associated with this cinematic style.  Not only does the word “Ebony” imply a certain degree of darkness, but this Stravinsky jazz piece also exhibits characteristic melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. The performers and staff are extremely excited about exploring a darker side of expression in “Noir.”

9/19/2005 Great Audition Weekend!

It probably sounds cliché, but its true... each year the talent at auditions increases at an amazing rate. Of course this is great to see, but it makes the job of the staff more and more difficult, deciding who should be invited to perform in the Pride of Cincinnati Winterguard. The auditions for the 2006 edition of Pride were really the best ever with 60+ incredibly talented performers.

For the first time Pride auditions were held on a single weekend. Beginning with "sign-in" at 6pm Friday evening, those attending were put through the paces of a(n almost) typical Pride rehearsal weekend. After a brief "welcome" by Director Charlie Gumbert, dance class began, including some movement fundamentals and the introduction to a choreographed piece. Equipment combinations were taught during the remainder of rehearsal on Friday and continued on Saturday. First "cuts" were made on Saturday night with 40 performers continuing on into the Sunday rehearsal. The weekend finished up with "show and tells" of all of the learned pieces.

Each individual attending Sunday's rehearsal will receive personal notification of their status, with invitations going out to the 30 amazing performers who will make up the 2006 Pride of Cincinnati Winterguard!

Stay tuned to the Pride website for the final list of performers and for the much awaited announcement regarding the show concept for 2006...

9/2/2005 Pride announces trip to Europe!

Pack your Bags for Europe!

Plans to send the Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard to the 2006 European WGI Regional were recently announced by the Pride Youth Development Foundation Board of Directors. This regional is being held in the Netherlands this year and will result in a clinic, regional performance and some sightseeing and free time in Amsterdam.

The Board reports membership fees will not be raised because of this trip. "This is the next step for us organizationally. The board would like to see the Pride of Cincinnati winter guard serve as an 'ambassador of pageantry' to help spread excitement about color guard to the entire world," said Ryan Alm, president of the Board.

Tentative plans have the members and staff climbing aboard a flight on Wed the week prior to the regional. This will allow them to spend a few days touring in Europe and doing some rehearsing. They will return on Monday of the following week.

Keep your eyes here from more info on this chance of a lifetime trip! FOR MORE INFO http://colorguardnederland.org/wgieuro/
