9/2/2005 Pride announces trip to Europe!

Pack your Bags for Europe!

Plans to send the Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard to the 2006 European WGI Regional were recently announced by the Pride Youth Development Foundation Board of Directors. This regional is being held in the Netherlands this year and will result in a clinic, regional performance and some sightseeing and free time in Amsterdam.

The Board reports membership fees will not be raised because of this trip. "This is the next step for us organizationally. The board would like to see the Pride of Cincinnati winter guard serve as an 'ambassador of pageantry' to help spread excitement about color guard to the entire world," said Ryan Alm, president of the Board.

Tentative plans have the members and staff climbing aboard a flight on Wed the week prior to the regional. This will allow them to spend a few days touring in Europe and doing some rehearsing. They will return on Monday of the following week.

4/13/05 Reflections on WGI from some Pride members...

Melissa Ganser:

This was truely an amazing season. I'll always remember standing in the tunnel waiting to go on and feeling an overwhelming sense of calm. As a color guard we were very focused and  ready to show the audience what we had worked so hard for. I don't think I've ever felt so prepared for a performance. My fellow performers were amazing as was the staff. I was so thankful to be at UD with the audience that was so supportive and responsive. This was an experience that I will never forget. Thank you fans, staff, board, and members.

Erin O'Connor:

"This was my second WGI but first in Dayton. When we got to the arena finals night and I was able to catch a glimpse of the crowd I was amazed. How wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate colorguard. I seem to be different than some performers in that I really enjoy performing in front of the large crowds. Even before we entered the tunnel I could hear the loud roar from inside the arena. As I waited and listened my anticipation to get out there and show everyone how hard we had worked during the season grew and grew. I can't even put into words my emotions once we finally took the floor for our last performance. Thank you to my fellow performers, and to everyone in UD arena who cheered us on; my experience at WGI 2005 is something I'll never forget."

Trevor Davis:

It was great to be back in Dayton for WGI. It's a wonderful experience to walk down the tunnel, to slowly see the audience appear, and the wind blowing in your face. Just as we entered the arena, the audience was screaming for us, just waiting to see us perform. After the show, all I wanted to do was sit there on the "You're not alone" bumper sticker and listen to the screaming crowd. It was great, no words can explain the emotions on the floor, or the energy flowing from one member to the next. Nothing will be as memorable as this, WGI 2005.

Brian Robinson:

For a first time performer in WGI I was excited to walk onto the floor for the first time.  As soon as I walked a few steps from the tunnel onto the floor I knew that I was about to experience something special.  In finals, it was my second time to walk on the floor in the Dayton Arena.  The crowd was electrifying even before we finished setting up.  I wanted more than anything to give them something they will always remember like many groups have done for me.

More member thoughts coming soon!

4/9/2005 Pride of Cincinnati is the 2005 WGI World Class Champion!!!

This is an excerpt of an article on the WGI webpage:

The talk of the night, however, was of the brilliant Gold Medal winning performance by Pride of Cincinnati (OH) whose program "Everybody Hurts" brought the UD Arena to its feet with a very exciting and emotional performance. Using various versions of the popular REM song and set on a floor resembling giant bumper stickers of various social issues with the guard dressed in blue coveralls, this well staged, well written and well performed show was truly winter guard at its best. Highlights included a moving weapon block across the floor and the freezing of time in the middle of an ensemble flag statement. Winning all captions across the board and receiving a perfect score from one of the judges earning a final score of 98.85.

3/26/05 Tragic accident claims the life of Pride alum and her mother...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Brianne May, her mother Bette Lou May, and their family during this sad time.

Brianne and her mother were struck by a train on Saturday morning, March 26, 2005, while trying to rescue their dogs from the oncoming train. Both women and their 2 dogs were killed instantly.

Brianne was a member of Pride in 1998 and 1999 (First Circle and Beyond the Rainbow.) She was a wonderful member and very much loved. We will miss her.

Visitation for friends and family will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston, IN from 4 - 7pm on Tuesday, March 29th. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, March 30th.

The following is the news article detailing the sad events:

Tragedy on the tracks

Mother, daughter struck, killed by train while trying to save dogs

By Reni Winter, Journal and Courier

BROOKSTON -- Two women died Saturday morning while trying to get their dogs out of the path of an oncoming train. The women and their two dogs were killed instantly.

Former Brookston resident Bette Lou May, 58, and her daughter, Brianne May, 28, died of massive blunt force trauma, White County chief deputy coroner Pat Jones said.

The accident occurred about 10 a.m. near the home of Zonabelle "Zonie" May, the mother of Bette Lou May, Brookston-Prairie Township Fire Chief Willis Johnson said.

"To the best of my knowledge, the engineer called it in," Johnson said. "He was blowing his horn trying to get their attention, but he said they looked up and froze."

The women had arrived in Brookston on Friday from their home in Tully, N.Y., to spend Easter with Zonie May, Johnson said.

"She is very broken up about this," Johnson said of Zonie May. "This is where the mother grew up. She knew the area, knew the railroad tracks and everything. She lived here for 50 years."

Amtrak Train 51, the Cardinal, was en route from New York to Chicago via Washington and Cincinnati, said Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak in Chicago. That same train makes an early-morning stop in Lafayette.

3/21/05 WGI Las Vegas Regional Champions!

On Thursday March 17, the Pride of Cincinnati headed west for the second time this season. With only a couple of delayed arrivals, the staff and members all landed in Las Vegas ready to prepare for their final WGI Regional performance of the year. Preparations included rehearsals on Thursday and Friday with inspiration coming in the form of a trip to the Celine Dion show at Caesar's Palace on Friday evening. The visual presentation of Celine's show was truly spectacular and the music brought many members of the audience to tears.

Rain on Saturday didn't dampen the spirits of the Pride crew, as much of the day was scheduled in rehearsal, anyway. More refinements to the show were made and then Pride was ready for their prelim performance. After dinner at the Boulder Station buffet, the 30 members of Pride dressed and loaded the bus for Palo Verde High School. The gym was crowded with an excited crowd,
and an announcement had to be made to clear the first few rows of the back stands for the safety of the spectators. The prelim performance was well received by the Las Vegas audience, with overheard comments about the remarkable emotion of Pride's show design and performance.

Prelims score: 93.7, first place.

Sunday morning dawned to beautiful weather, sunny with mild temperatures. After a long drive and a short rehearsal, it was once again time for lunch and show preparations. The finals performance came off even stronger than prelims, with fewer obvious mistakes and even more emotion. The Pride performers were rewarded with an evenhigher score, followed by a well deserved evening of fun on the Vegas Strip!

Finals score: 94.8 (.1 penalty), first place.

Next stop for Pride... The Tri State Circuit Championships, Saturday April 2, Ryle High School, Union, KY!

3/13/05 WGI Midwest Power Regional IW Champions!

Staying close to home since the West Power Regional in San Bernardino, Pride has taken the opportunity to refine the design of their already popular interpretation of "Everybody Hurts". The debut of the changes took place at a local show in Milford, Ohio on Sunday, March 6, with the national audience viewing the enhancements at the Mid West Power Regional in Chesterton, Indiana, on March 12 and 13.

Most notibly, changes have occured in the show's climactic all flag feature and the ending movement statement. Crowd response was very positive, with more than just a few teary eyes noticed in the stands at the end of Pride's performance in both prelims and finals.

Prelims score: 90.95
Finals score: 92.2

This week Pride heads back west to the Las Vegas Regional!

2/21/2005 WGI West Power Regional!!!

THEY say "It never rains in California", but it seems that each time the Pride of Cincinnati has ventured to the west coast cool temperatures and precipitation follow. In spite of record rainfall, mudslides and even some rare tornado action, Pride's trip to the first Power Regional of the 2005 season can certainly not be called dreary!

Performing last in prelims, Pride's strong performance earned them first place with a score of 86.6. West Coast favorites San Jose Raiders and Northern Lights placed second and third place, respectively.

The finals performance on Sunday, accompanied by more bad weather and just a few pre-show jitters, resulted in the first Power Regional victory for Pride in the 2005 season with a score of 87.75. San Jose finished in second 1.2 points behind Pride. Northern Lights remained third, Oracle fourth and last year's WGI IW champion, Fantasia, finished in fifth place. For complete scores and placements please visit www.wgi.org.

2/16/2005 Mideast Regional!!!

The weekend of February 12 and 13 marked the opening of the competitive season for the Pride of Cincinnati Winterguard, with their first public appearance of the year at the WGI Mid-East Regional. Originally schedule to begin the season at a Tri- State Circuit show on January 29, mother nature had different ideas when an ice storm hit the Ohio River Valley, cancelling the competition. Needless to say, nerves were on edge as the colorguard prepared for their Mid-East prelims performance.

As Pride took the floor on Saturday afternoon the crowd's excitement became apparent. The announcer began, "Are the judges ready?... Is the guard ready?" Pride confidently moved into position and froze into their opening poses. "Pride of Cincinnati, you may take the floor in competition!" The tension was thick in the air... the performers poised, ready to begin... the silence almost deafening... NO MUSIC!

Looking up to the sound table the audience could see the restrained panic as the sound system had obviously malfunctioned. Director, Charles Gumbert called for the guard to relax and staff member Rosie Miller rushed from the stands onto the floor to "rally the troops".

Quickly coming to Pride's aid, the staff of another guard ran to the sound table, boom box in-hand. The stereo was quickly hooked into the official system and the show was ready to begin again. Unfortunately the music trauma and the unexpected wait had taken their toll and Pride's first performance of the year was a bit shakier than they had hoped. Prelims score 83.0, first place Independent World Class.

Putting the prelims "excitement" behind them Pride awoke on Sunday ready to redeem themselves. After an extremely tight rehearsal and final run, Pride returned to Miamisburg High School well prepared to better their performance. Once again Pride entered the gym, wearing their fitted blue denim cover-alls, to the welcoming cheers of their loyal fans. They laid out their printed, sepia toned floor of giant, overlapping bumper stickers and once again took their opening poses. This time, Pride's own cd player in-hand, staff member Jonathan Schwartz watched over the sound table as the music began with no problem. The performance proceeded with beautiful choreography and intricate equipment work, coordinated to a moving sound track of REM's "Everybody Hurts". The spectacular show design, emotional interpretation of the sound track and greatly improved performance earned Pride the Mid-East Regional Independent World Championship with score of 84.4.

Next stop... WGI West POWER Regional, San Bernardino, California, February 19 and 20.

11/11/04 Pride announces 2005 Program!!!

Yes/no, for/against, pro and anti voices will be heard as the 2005 Pride of Cincinnati plasters gym floors across the country with a barrage of socially, and politically-charged bumper sticker messages.  The soundtrack will further celebrate this diversity of thought combined with the shared experience of the human condition by presenting various stylistic treatments of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.”

Pride’s 30 extremely talented young men and women will take full advantage of the staging, choreography, set design, costuming, and color selection to develop subtle metaphors for a very simple message:  Whether our individual passions are big, small, local, global, or completely personal; “Everybody Hurts Sometimes.  You are not alone.”

9/26/04 2005 Pride of Cincinnati is selected!!!

It was a grueling two weekends of auditioning, but the final decisions have been made and the 30 performers who will make up the 2005 Pride of Cincinnati have been chosen! Not only were the physical and mental demands of the process draining for those fighting to make the guard, the staff certainly felt the pressures, as well. Audition scores were tallied and re-tallied, as each individual's strengths and weaknesses were carefully weighed. After GREAT debate the final 17 ladies and 13 gentlemen were selected!

Congratulations to these dedicated and deserving performers and thanks to everyone who made the audition process a success!

9/20/04 Auditions held for 2005 Winter Guard Season!

Close to 60 talented performers were in attendance on Saturday and Sunday, September 11th and 12 for the first phase of the audition process for the 2005 edition of the Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard. Young men and women from across the U.S. and Canada participated in fast paced sessions of choreography and equipment work. Personal interviews were also conducted with each prospective member. Throughout the two day camp each performer was rated on their performance on flag, rifle, sabre and body. All instructional staff members were on-hand to evaluate the performers and make the difficult decisions required to narrow down the field of exceptionally well qualified individuals.

On Sunday evening the staff met to make the all important decisions of who would be invited to a call-back camp. The decisions were definitely the toughest ever, but eventually the 60 were whittled down to 40. These 40 performers will be back in Middletown, Ohio once again on the weekend of September 24-26 for more intensive training and evaluation. Final decisions will be made during the call-back camp and then the 2005 show will begin to take shape!

Thanks to everyone who auditioned for this year's Pride of Cincinnati and a HUGE "Good Luck!" to those who will be returning for the call-back camp!
